The Holy See has a new Nuncio for the Kuwait, Bahrain, Yemen, and Qatar - Lebanese archbishop Mounged El-Hachem.

They must wish they had appointed somebody else. His first
public interview caused dismay in the Vatican, as he made excuses for Islamist terrorism, and compounded this by misquoting Pope Paul VI to make him appear to share his sympathy with terrorists.

First, his own views:

I consider that terror is the result of repression, of suffering, of injustice directed against a person, a group or a particular people, who lose all that they possess and no longer have anything to regret or to lose…. … Terrorist acts flow from distress and from a despair of ever recovering one’s rights. And such is the despair, in some cases, that an individual may be driven to suicide as a means of protest and of drawing attention to his plight

I must emphasise that Pope Paul did not say the following. Archbishop El-Hachem, at one time the vice-director of the Holy See’s press office, made it up:

This reminds me of the distressing incident at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, when young Palestinians massacred Israeli athletes. I recall the shocked outcry throughout the world and the strong condemnation by the international community. At that time I was in the Vatican. It was a sunny Sunday and Pope Paul VI appeared at his window and addressed the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square in these words: “We too reprove and denounce the massacre in Munich, but we ask the following question: why have young Palestinians committed this act? We reply: because the Palestinian people (it was the first time anyone had spoken of the Palestinian “people”) have been the victims of the most dangerous of injustices in the history of humanity, an innocent and peaceable people turned out of their land, who have lost their roots and identity amid the indifference of the entire world… What impelled these young men to commit this act was to attract the attention of the world to their cause”.

But if you re-read the words Paul VI really spoke at the Angelus and at the Wednesday general audience before that, where he also commented on the massacre in Munich, you will find nothing of what El-Hachem puts into his mouth, even using quotation marks to give a false appearance of authenticity.

In the authentic words of Paul VI, one does not find the expression “Palestinian people,” nor, above all, the explanation of the massacre carried out by the terrorists as something animated by their condition as innocent victims.

You can read Pope Paul’s real words in the Chiesa article linked above, and they bear little resemblance to the Lebanese Archbishop’s fictional version.

We also deplore the manner [of the attack] – which has become common, almost fashionable – a devious method, because it is directed against persons who do not expect it, who cannot defend themselves. We cannot help but raise up our voices as well, and the swelling of our emotions, which still intend to be sentiments of fraternity, peace, and love in a world that remains so disturbed by this scene of violence and blood.

...terrorism is unworthy of civil and valorous men; it strikes innocents and shatters faith in peaceful coexistence;

El-Hachem tells us that ‘the first task of an apostolic nuncio is that of “representing the pope as the head of the Catholic Church.”’ His views on terrorism do not represent the views of either Pope Paul VI or the present Pope. Perhaps he should be given another job, where he can't do any harm. I suggest chaplain to an enclosed convent.

Voor mensen die ervan overtuigd zijn dat anti-Zionisme en anti-Semitisme niets met elkaar te maken hebben, moet de nieuwste rel rond Gretta Duisenberg als een onaangename verrassing komen. In opnamen voor het televisieprogramma "Het Zwarte Schaap" heeft ze gezegd dat de joodse gemeenschap niet moet denken dat ze Amsterdam-Zuid kunnen annexeren zoals Israël de Westelijke Jordaanoever.
Ze begrijpt niet dat mensen zo over deze opmerking vallen en haar van anti-Semitisme beschuldigen. "Zo heb ik het helemaal niet bedoeld", zo zou de onthutste en geschrokken mevrouw Duisenberg aan Dries van Agt telefonisch hebben laten weten. Het is allemaal, aldus Van Agt, weer hopeloos uit zijn verband gerukt. Het is inderdaad hoogst verwonderlijk dat mensen deze opmerking, nadat Amsterdam in WOII door de Nazi's judenrein is gemaakt en er nog maar een fractie van het vroegere aantal woont, zo kunnen opvatten. Dit zal er wel mee te maken hebben dat joden nou eenmaal zo op hun eigen lijden in de Holocaust gefixeerd zijn, dat zij geen enkel begrip meer op kunnen brengen voor de penibele situatie van de arme mevrouw Duisenberg. Mensen zouden in restaurants in Amsterdam-Zuid wel eens onaangename opmerkingen naar haar maken en sommigen hebben zelfs hun tong naar haar uitgestoken. Het is inderdaad begrijpelijk dat een dergelijke opmerking je dan ontglipt. (Is dit niet waar de joden op zitten te wachten? Een slip of the tongue zodat ze haar weer aan de schandpaal kunnen nagelen om haar het spreken over de racistische politiek van hun staat onmogelijk te maken? Zo sluw zijn ze wel.) Terwijl Job Cohen, Achmed Aboutaleb, Femke Halsema en nog een aantal inwoners van Amsterdam worden beveiligd omdat zij met de dood zijn bedreigd, en Hirsi Ali en Geert Wilders maanden ondergedoken hebben gezeten en nog steeds geen stap kunnen zetten zonder overleg met hun beveiligers, mogen we de ernst van Duisenberg's zaak zeker niet onderschatten.

Het is moeilijk, zo niet onmogelijk, je voor te stellen dat mevr. Duisenberg inderdaad niet begrijpt waarom haar opmerking zoveel commotie veroorzaakt, zoals zij indertijd ook al zei het niet te begrijpen waarom haar opmerkingen over de 6 miljoen handtekeningen, en de vergelijking van de Israëlische bezetting met de Nazi's, dat deden. Ze is niet dom, en is -bij mijn weten althans- opgegroeid in Nederland en moet dus wel eens van de Holocaust hebben gehoord, en twee millennia van discriminatie en vervolging die daaraan vooraf gingen.
Het is haar goed recht het voor de Palestijnen op te nemen en de Israëlische bezetting fel te bekritiseren. Ze zoekt daarbij echter telkens de grens op -en gaat er overheen- door een complete bevolkingsgroep te beledigen en te kwetsen. Er hangt vaak een wat hitserige en rellerige sfeer rond haar, en ik kan mij dan ook niet aan de indruk onttrekken dat zij dit bewust opzoekt. Als zij een moment uit haar slachtofferrol zou vallen, zou zij verbaasd moeten zijn dat ze niet allang is veroordeeld voor anti-Semitisme. Toen zij -volgens van Agt- 'verdrietig, onthutst en overstuur was' vanwege de felle reacties op haar opmerking, betrof het hoogstwaarschijnlijk krokodillentranen.
Wie kaatst moet de bal verwachten. Ik wens de heer Moskowicz veel succes bij het aanspannen van een rechtszaak, en wat mij betreft is haar rol in het debat over het Midden-Oosten conflict nu definitief uitgespeeld.

Pax Christi held a vigil outside Downing street, to encourage the destruction of the barrier Israelis have built to protect themselves from mass-murdering terrorists. The organisers deliberately chose 9 November as the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The 9th November marks the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and Pax Christi have chosen this day to urge the British Government to do all it can to persuade the Government of Israel to dismantle the separation wall between Israel and Palestine.

Coincidentally, and perhaps more appropriately, 9 November is also the anniversary of Kristallnacht.

If organisations like Pax Christi had their way, perhaps history would repeat itself.
