The news item below, which I just learned about, indicates that perhaps talk of reform has scared the UN into beginning to treat Israel decently. Hopefully, Wendy

'I hope to influence UN decision making'
By HERB KEINON AND JPOST STAFF
The United Nations on Monday appointed Israel's ambassador Dan Gillerman as one of 21 new vice presidents of the General Assembly, the first time since Abba Eban in the early 1950s that Israel has been given this ceremonial post.
"Beyond the symbolic and perhaps even historic significance of the appointment, I will also be a member of the UN's committee that determines the organization's agenda," Gillerman told Israel Radio on Tuesday morning.
According to Gillerman, "I hope I will be able to influence UN decision-making, although it will not be an easy task."
Roni Leshno Ya'ar, the Foreign Ministry's deputy director-general for the UN and international organizations, termed the move significant because "it is an additional step in Israel's efforts to be a country like all others, and to normalize our standing at the UN."
Ya'ar said that he would now like to see possible Israeli involvement in UN peacekeeping forces and humanitarian projects abroad – perhaps as senior doctors or members of the logistical staff.
Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom issued a statement congratulating UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the General Assembly for supporting Gillerman's candidacy. He said Israel would continue to work toward normalizing and improving its position in the UN, and winning equal rights in the world body, including one of the rotating seats on the UN Security Council.
Shalom discussed a possible Israeli seat on the Security Council, something Israel has never held, during a meeting he had with Annan in New York earlier this month.
Israel's candidacy as deputy vice president of the General Assembly was put forth by the regional group it belongs to: the Western Europe and Others Group (WEOG).
Ya'ar said that Gillerman would now have input into the General Assembly agenda and would be called upon to chair some of its meetings.
