JENIN, West Bank -- Israeli soldiers shot and critically wounded a 13-year-old Palestinian boy who threw stones at troops patrolling the town, Palestinian hospital officials said, backtracking on their initial announcement that the boy had died.
The Israeli military said soldiers shot a Palestinian youth as they fired on a group of Palestinians who were shooting and throwing stones at them. The Red Crescent was transferring Ahmed Ismail Khatib to an Israeli hospital, Palestinians and Israelis said.
Live bullets struck him in the head and stomach, and he was put on life support, Palestinian medical officials said.
Soldiers were in the town at the time pursuing an Islamic Jihad fugitive, Husam Jarradat, who later escaped, Palestinian witnesses said.
